CHALLENGER PROGRAMS 2009
What
is the CHALLENGER DIVISION?
It is the purpose of the CHALLENGER
DIVISION to provide an athletic experience for the children who are physically
or mentally challenged, in a wholesome, supervised environment, and expose
these children to the benefits offered by team sports. The GCAA Baseball and
Basketball programs both provide Challenger Divisions.
The
most fundamental goal of the CHALLENGER DIVISION is to give everyone a chance
to play, regardless of limitations.
These
programs consist of games as well as clinics designed to teach and improve the
skill level of those children involved so that these youngsters become part of
a regular athletic program.
These
programs are open to any challenged child age 6 through 18 (21 if still in
school). The child is placed on a team based on skill and safety
considerations rather than age. Each team is assigned to a team manager
as well as coaches to work with the children during practice sessions and
games. Parents and other adult volunteers are encouraged to assist.
In
addition, each player is assigned a "BUDDY: to work with during practices
and games. A "BUDDY" is any person who is a willing volunteer,
genuinely desiring to assist in the program: youngsters from the local
Little League communities are encouraged to be "BUDDIES."
